Traditional fut san lion dance and its Martial roots

The Texas Dragon/Lion Dance Team (TDDT) and the United States Dragon & Lion Dance Federation (USDLDF) are proud to present a Fut San Style Lion Dance Seminar from September 17 - 18, 2022 in Austin, Texas.

This course will be taught by Grandmaster Lee Kam Wing of the Seven Star Praying Mantis style. Grandmaster Lee will teach an additional martial arts seminar for those interested in the Seven Star Mantis style.

Course 1 - Traditional Fut San Lion Dancing and its Martial Roots

Description

This course is designed for practitioners of all skill levels to come together and learn more about the beautiful and robust style of Fut San lion dance. The course will cover the following topics:

  • Lion handling

  • Stepping

  • Head movements

  • Tail coordination

  • Drumming, including Seven Star Beat and Drum Flowering techniques

  • Coordination of drum, gong, and cymbals

  • Traditional Chengs used for businesses

This seminar will be hands on, and participants should expect to be active most of the time instead of sitting through lectures. To maximize the instruction and practice time for individuals attending this seminar, in person attendance is limited to a maximum of 50 participants.

Early bird registration discount available until August 1, 2022:

  • USDLDF Members: $150

  • Non-Members: $200

Prices will increase by $50 after August 1, 2022.

Note: This course is not an introduction to lion dance. Prior experience in the art is necessary to attend this event.

In addition to the above seminar, Grandmaster Lee Kam Wing will be teaching an advanced level set of the Seven Star Mantis Style and its related applications.

Course Costs

Early bird registration discount available through August 1, 2022:

  • Lion Dance Seminar Registrants: $50

  • Kung Fu Set Only Registrants: $75

Prices for the Kung Fu Seminar will increase by $25 for registrants on August 1, 2022.


Note: Those attending the lion dance seminar who have previous martial arts experience are welcome to participate in this course and will receive a discount upon registering for both events.

Note: This course is not designed to teach beginners of Chinese Martial Arts, prior experience is necessary to attend this event.

The Instructor

About Grandmaster Lee Kam Wing

Grandmaster Lee has been propagating the arts of Seven Star Mantis and Lion Dance since 1972 in his native Hong Kong and around the world. In his time as an instructor of these arts he has published numerous books and videos on the art of Seven Star Mantis, and has been featured in numerous magazines, interviews, and documentaries worldwide. Grandmaster Lee’s lion dance drumming skills were recently featured during a performance along with the prestigious Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.

In addition, Grandmaster Lee leads the Hong Kong Southern and Northern Martial Arts Federation and the World of Seven Star Traditional Martial Arts Federation. Grandmaster Lee's students continue to propagate the arts in Hong Kong (as teachers in the Hong Kong branch of Chin Woo), and in other countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Hungary, France, and Australia.
